Big hats, Seersucker suits, and Mint Julips will be all the rage this weekend as the 140th annual Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs. It is known as the best 2 minutes in sports, but this year many organizations are figuring out ways to extend those 2 minutes into a year of funding success. Known affectionately as a “party with a purpose”, charitable organizations across the country are combining the Kentucky Derby festivities with fundraisers. It’s a great way to make the giving process more fun and exciting, and also allows some who may not be able to travel to still take part in the annual event.
Although the Kentucky Derby is considered primarily a Southern cultural event, the allure of the Derby has spread as far as NYC, with local athletic clubs and art galleries holding parties this weekend. Tickets for these events can range from as low as $50 to hundreds of dollars per person, with guests enjoying their fill of Southern fair and competing for prizes for ‘Best Hat’ or ‘Best Bow Tie’. With proceeds going to charities such as Arts & Entertainment or Medical Facilities, your ticket price is a small price to pay for a contribution to a well-deserved organization.
